Mike doesn't have more basses than Matt's had McDonald's, but it's close.

With such a vast array of instruments Mike explains the relative merits of each ........

This is a Squier 5 string precision. They don't make them any more. Quite a wide neck and quite thin sounding. A nice intro to 5 string but wasn't my main player for very long.

A Sandberg Ken Taylor 4 string. It's a beast. Made in 2005. Ash body, so loads of sustain but heavy. Dual humbuckers means it growls, but an active preamp means the top can sing if it's dialed in that way.

Often my go to if I want to play a 4 string. Really nice to play, satin finish on the neck.

But sitting down. It's heavy.

So this was my upgrade from the Squier.

Active preamp and dual humbuckers, so more growly. Like the Sandberg. Only thing is it's full time active. Not the end of the world. And much better quality than the equivalent Fender in my opinion.

G&L have taken the traditional precision and put it on steroids. I'm keeping this one for a while.

Love the body on this! It's so comfortable to play! Most of my recording at home is done on this. It's a Spector Legend 4.

My dream bass is a Spector NS 5 but that's going to have to wait for the studio tour. Again, full time active and the famous Spector Jr tone pump preamp means the sound is quite configurable. This and the Sandberg are my favourite 4s.

Years and years ago, when I had a well paying job and no bills to pay, I had a fretless Warwick. I sold it like an idiot. I regret that to this day.

When I saw this fretless Cort in the shop I couldn't not. It's fun, and it's switchable between active and passive. And it's cool. It's short scale so I feel like a giant when I play it.

I like my fretless, I like my acoustic, and this was for sale so why not? It's fun and mwaahy. Well done Aria. Won't be gigging this one either I don't think. Maybe if we do an MTV unplugged.......🤣

Old faithful, my Takamine. Had this for years and years. It's a bit dusty now but if I ever pick it up, I do struggle to put it down again.

Can't gig with it, feeds back like I don't know what, but it's part of the family. It's going nowhere.

Now this one Really makes me feel like a giant. The rubber strings are a bit weird but fine after you get used to them. It sounds very double bassy but again feeds back like a bad 'un. Another fun one.

I really do need to play it more.

My current favourite. It's a beaut. Cort really know what they're doing - beautiful smooth neck, not too chunky. Hipshot lightweight tuners and nord strand single coil pickups.

The eq makes it a lot of fun and you can get all sorts of tones from it. It's got a chambered body so it's lighter - easy(er) on the back.

I really like the 35" scale - makes the B string not floppy. Which is an issue with the G&L and the Squier. Nothing worse than a floppy b string.

The last bass I'm ever going to buy.

Until the next one of course.

I'm all about the bass! Haven't gigged with an amp for a long time. That amp model pedal top left is brilliant. You'd never know I wasn't playing through an old school 8x10 cab - but you don't need to lift it! It's brilliant.

Not a lot to say other than that, pedal wise.

Old faithful Boss TU2 will probably outlive me. It's about 20 years old I think.

I don't use the looper as a looper - just as a sampler - the strings, sirens and gong you hear when we play live all come from here. So does President Trump. If only he could be switched off as easily in reality 🤪🤪
